Dmusing #5

There's a unique feeling that transpires when looking at a place you once lived in being deconstructed. Abandoned. Left for dead. Re-imagined as an empty space. It helps to have old soul music playing in the background.

Tonight I spontaneously introduced a new element to the Sound of Confusion: Eric's Dinner Special! Tonight's was playing the entirety of Sonic Youth's new SYR 8 release, which, as WMUA DJ Rich of Cosmic Slop called in to note, is really fucking great.

My Two Weeks Notice show. Only two more Wednesday shows before I move on to bigger and better things. However, on a positive note, I believe I've found the perfect vocal break backing track, Wu-Tang Clan's "Shame on a Nigga." Jay-Z's "Takeover" was strongly considered.

Sure, hating on pitchfork is easy, but a quick glance through their 2002 (and earlier even) top 50 albums shows some redemption. i mean clearly, the top 20 is going to be filled with major indie label artists, but [just to name a few] acid mothers temple, dj/rupture, hot snakes, isis, mclusky, walkmen, enon, and liars, many of which were definitely not their best albums, still has some "good old days" nostalgia. shit, if it hasn't been done, pfork top 50 albums pools could become the new betting pool.

Dmusing #2

I will never consider myself an expert of football, but all I've ever known about football began and most likely end with Brett Favre. My entire bloodline is Wisconsin-tied, and spending at least part of my childhood in Northern Michigan was enough to ingrain some interest in the sport, where I was told the area was split 50/50 Packers/Lions. No joke, that man to me is, was, and always will be the embodiment of how I could ideally perceive the game- as fun. Watching a brief clip of him on the ESPN website, I saw a man who wanted to play for one team and one team only. The thing was, the team didn't want him. It's not sports, but that's still personal rejection.

I hope the Jets are a good rebound, Brett.

You will notice a large section devoted to In the Red Records releases. The following email excerpt I sent to In the Red is how they were obtained:

Hi,

King Khan told me to tell you guys that you need to send us some promotional stuff because I gave him and the Shrines LSD last night. If this doesn't happen I'm going to kill King Khan before they hit the stage tonight in Boston.

Kids, let that be a lesson to you. Just threaten record labels.

I've had a chance to listen to all three versions* of Smile by Boris and I've come to the conclusion that there needs to be a refund given to anyone that purchased the Southern Lord CD version. The Japanese and SL vinyl both had it right to start the album off with "Statement" (different versions, but same overall engaging effect), whereas the SL CD version starts off with the absolute buzz-kill, not to mention poorly mixed, "Flower Sun Rain." And the mixing on the SL CD version is just beyond reprehensible. Some tracks just get cut off like it's nobody's business.

*I don't even want to know what the $400 dollar vinyl version wrapped in fox fur sounds like**.

**Yes I do.

SoC NOTICE

I will not be doing my show tomorrow night. Instead, WMUA's Mayhem in the AM host Jeanine and I are trading time slots. So if you have the wherewithal to get up at 6 AM and listen to me spin till 8 AM, more power to you.

Sound of Confusion 07/23/08

Not my proudest show by a long shot. Wasn't feeling it going into it and when I couldn't find the new Matmos album I just lost all interest. I played long songs and played this flash game. Have I mentioned yet how little good music has come out so far this year? I might be able to count the good ones on both hands, maybe.
